When Kathy Morrell set out to write a play about Nellie McClung, the famous Canadian activist, a drama director warned her: “Don’t fall in love with your character.”
“Too late,” Morrell responded.
By the time Morrell had decided to write the play, she had read quite a bit about McClung. Morrell knew she admired greatly what McClung had accomplished and how the activist went about it.
“She had perseverance, and she was tough — you didn’t want to tangle with her,” said Morrell.
“And she did everything with such wit. She was incredibly funny, and had a lot of charisma — all the qualities of a good leader.”
Nellie McClung: A One “Person” Play, starring Morrell’s friend Wendy Jeanne Smith, was performed in Moose Jaw on Saturday, March 13.
