Once in awhile, Kenneth McCluskey watches the 1991 movie The Commitments, in which he played the bass player of a band for which the film is named.
McCluskey, who played the character Derek “The Meatman” Scully, is one of two of the movie band’s original members that currently tour in a show called The Stars from the Commitments, bringing the group’s brand of “Dublin soul” to the world. McCluskey now plays lead guitar in the touring show.
The show was in Moose Jaw on Tuesday, March 16 at the Moose Jaw Cultural Centre.
“Occasionally on the tour bus, we watch the movie for a laugh and to see how well I have aged,” wrote McCluskey from Ireland in an e-mail interview.
The other original member is Dick Massey, who played Billy “The Animal” Mooney, the band’s percussionist, in the movie. In the touring show, he also plays the drums.
