Almost as enjoyable as the poems Jack Whyte performed were the stories he told to introduce the poems.
Speaking at a Festival of Words session at the Moose Jaw Museum and Art Gallery on Sunday, the first poem Whyte read was one he wrote for a friend's 50th birthday.
Whyte said writing his own birthday messages for people is something he has done for many years.
"I'm a Scot. I hate parting with money to be told what to think, so I don't think I've been in a Hallmark store in my life," he told members of the audience.
The poem itself was both thought provoking and humorous. Whyte describes the attitudes of people at particular ages leading up to 50. He then tells his friend (in a way that's both funny and profane) to relax.
The second poem Whyte read on Sunday was an environmental piece. He said once while driving with his wife, some musician on the radio started talking about the environment and began to sing a song.
