Coming together through art, learning and making people feel at home in a new place was what a special program run by the Moose Jaw Museum & Art Gallery was all about.
‘Women Connecting Through Art’ was an 18 week program which saw local volunteers paired with immigrant women to work on different projects.
Volunteers helped the participants with their English but most importantly offered friendship and support to welcome them to Moose Jaw.
The first six sessions were run by Anna Hergert, who taught hand-stitching.
Wendy Parsons then took over to instruct on working with clay and the final six weeks were photography classes taught by Gabriela Garcia-Luna.
Funding for the program was provided by the Government of Saskatchewan’s Ministry of Advance Education, Employment and Labour through the Community Connections Program.
During a reception held at the art gallery on Friday, Christy Schweiger, education co-ordinator said the program was a huge success.
“It’s a mix of women from the Multicultural Centre and women of all ages.”
