Being on the road isn’t always easy but playing on stage in front of a good audience more than makes up for it, according to folk musician and songwriter Garnet Rogers.
He will be playing at the Moose Jaw Cultural Centre on Sept. 15 at 8 p.m. for the first time and said he is looking forward to visiting the city properly.
“I have been through Moose Jaw a lot and had a very sad and lonely Thanksgiving dinner in a Chinese restaurant there.”
But Rogers, who lives outside Brantford, Ontario, said he loves prairie towns — especially the sense of community.
“You see people living there lives and you kind of long to be there as there’s a sense of community,” he said.
And to help build his community ties, Rogers is encouraging audience members to bring non-perishable food and items of personal care such as shampoo and soap for the Moose Jaw & District Food Bank.
“I have been trying to build in food bank connections for well over 15 years. My wife and I are both involved with local food banks.
“The idea is so that the show is not just about me and my guitar and what ever songs I have written lately and focuses more on the community I am in.
“When I leave Moose Jaw, the idea is the next morning, however the show went, at least we did something good for someone we will never meet. It keeps the focus off me and I think that’s important,” Rogers said.
