Moose Jaw ceramic artist Zach Dietrich picks up a clay bowl he created last year.
He points at the dark red colour that graces its bottom and sides.
“The red turned out so well — beyond my wildest dreams,” he said, his voice still reflecting the excitement he felt when he first pulled it out of the kiln.
Dietrich explained the kiln has to be fired exactly right, with precisely the correct amount of oxygen, for the red glaze to appear so vividly.
His enthusiasm may seem like it comes from a pottery amateur thrilled with a first-time piece.
In fact, Dietrich has been making ceramics for more than 30 years.
A retrospective of his work, and that of his wife, Wendy Parsons, is currently on display at the Moose Jaw Museum and Art Gallery. The show is called “Reflections.”
It’s the constant challenge that pottery poses that keeps the two engaged in its creation, said Parsons.
“That’s why we’ve taken it on as careers — pottery is always interesting,” said Parsons.
