Katimavik youth attended a recent Speechcraft workshop conducted by Toastmasters at Palliser (TAPS). This was the first in a series of meetings in the Speechcraft program. The 12 Katimavik participants were from various cities and towns across Canada.
The theme of the meeting was Best Weekend Ever, with Doris Dunphy presiding as Toastmaster. To begin the meeting, participants interviewed the person next to them and then gave an introduction. Sharlene Anakaer, serving as timer, also presented a toast to the best weekend.
Evaluate to Motivate, an educational presentation, was given by Lorna Arnold. Evaluations form an important part of the Toastmasters program and include four major points.
Joy Desjarlais presented the education module on impromptu speaking and conducted a table topics session involving the guests.
Each of the participants spoke on a topic related to the best weekend theme. Topics ranged from the most romantic weekend in Nanaimo, B.C., the most stressful weekend of a lost hotel reservation in Saskatoon to the worst weekend - no such thing, to the most boring weekend of job resume writing on a Saturday night. Another guest spoke on a survival weekend in a co-ed camp.
The module on opening body and closing of a speech was presented by Cathy Morrell
At the next program each Speechcrafter will present an icebreaker speech.
TAPS meets Tuesdays at 7 p.m. in the boardroom of SIAST Palliser Campus. Guests are welcome. Information is available at 693-1238.
