The ninth annual Cankerworm festival was held in Elgin Park on Sunday with hundreds of families enjoying the sun and fun of the festival.
Kids of all ages could play in the bouncing gym or inflatable slide, or play tic tac toe, ring toss or hoop shot as part of the midway that made its first appearance at the festival.
The festival, arranged by the Northwest Community Association, also had a petting zoo, pony rides, clowns, parachutes, snakes and ladders, a burrowing owl exhibit and a Saskatchewan Science Centre demonstration.
"This is the first time we have invited the Science Centre to be at the festival." said Margaret Moran, co-ordinator of the festival. "It has been a great success."
At the science centre demonstration kids could learn about the environment by playing games like food web, biodiversity dominoes and environmental topple. Through a water game participants learned how the phosphorus scale of water affects the organisms living in rivers and lakes.
"This is a great way for kids to learn about reducing pollution," said Jayne Werry from the outreach department at the Science Centre. "Events like this festival make learning fun for the kids."
Moran said she hopes the festival has become more about family fun rather than just kid fun.
"This is a family festival. We have had a great day, with beautiful weather and we just want families to be able to come out and enjoy each other," said Moran.
Moran said the turnout was great this year and she is already looking forward to next year's event.
"Next year will be the 10th anniversary of the festival. I plan to make it even bigger and have more things for the kids to do," said Moran.
The festival began in 1999 when the association started banding trees to out keep the cankerworm.
"We decided to hold a celebration honouring the community support in banding the trees and eventually that celebration spun into the festival we have today," said Moran.
The festival is made possible by sponsorship from the city of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan lotteries, TD Canada Trust and Moose Jaw Co-op.
"We are very thankful for the support we have been given throughout the years and we hope the festival continues for years to come," said Moran.

The Festival was advertised extensively on Golden West Radio, all three radio stations, in the Times Herald, and there were posters on Hall Street. How much more advertising would you have liked.

This is a very small volunteer group that put on this excellent festival year after year without little help. They deserve a little bit more than your disappointment of not getting what sound like you wanted, a hand delivered invitation.

Advertising got as far as Belle Plaine!, Recieved two email streams and saw posters in a few locations.

Well done, see you next year.

Very nice to advertise, I live on Elgin and had no idea of the festival going on. I have 2 young boys that would have loved to go but knew nothing of it till yesterday. If it's such a big event, why not advertise it more. Very disappointed about it.
