When Codie Prevost performs at the Moose Jaw Hometown Fair on Sunday, he will have recently finished playing a series of gigs in Nashville, Tenn., during the Country Music Association festival.
When interviewed by the Times-Herald last week, the country music artist, who calls Saskatoon home, had just finished hiring some musicians to play with him at a party at a Nashville club.
"Performing shows like that are key to networking in Nashville, and things are really coming together in that aspect. I'm meeting a lot of people," said Prevost.
Prevost, 24, originally from Archerwill, Sask., has also been spending a lot of time songwriting in Nashville in preparation for his third album.
His second album, Spin 6-Pak Vol. 1, earned him six awards at the Saskatchewan Country Music Association Awards in April, including male vocalist of the year, fans' choice entertainer of the year and album of the year.
"I really wasn't expecting that. There are so many good artists in Saskatchewan, and I was nominated alongside people such as Donny Parenteau and Brad Johner."
The idea with Spin 6-Pak is that Prevost would put out a CD of six songs at more frequency than a full album of 12 to 14 songs in an effort to compete in the constantly changing marketplace for new entertainment fuelled by the Internet. The next album he puts out will be another "six pack."
Helping him write the songs for Spin 6-Pak Vol. 1 were Canadian singer/songwriter Steve Fox and Adam Wheeler, who also writes songs for Clay Walker.
Prevost prefers to co-write songs.
"What you get out of two people can be stronger sometimes than just one. You get more ideas, more opinions, and it increases my skill as a songwriter working with people who have high-calibre skill in the craft."
While Prevost needed to hire musicians in Nashville because of the expense of flying his band there, when Prevost performs in Moose Jaw, he will have his full band with him.
The band is Allison Tymiak on fiddle, Al Leblanc (also Prevost's manager) on bass guitar, Joey Landreth on lead guitar and Charles Dumont on drums. Prevost plays acoustic guitar and sings.
Mandy Higgins can be reached at 691-1264.
