Two local residents have received grants from the Saskatchewan Arts Board.
Moose Jaw artist Michael McKenna has been awarded a $6,000 Indigenous Pathways Initiative Contemporary Arts (IPICA) grant, and Emma Winowich, a 12-year-old student from Cornerstone Christian School, has been awarded a $2,500 Premier's Centennial Arts (PCA) scholarship to attend the Royal Winnipeg Ballet in the fall.
According to a press release, McKenna will use the grant to assist him in the development of his portfolio and the creation of a website.
The IPICA grant enables artists to work on projects that are contemporary or traditional and may include one or more art forms.
Winowich is one of 13 students to be a recipient of the PCA scholarship. The PCA was established to acknowledge and support the potential of young Saskatchewan artists.
The scholarship is awarded to students to help them to attend dance, music, writing and art programs across the country.
Winowich is currently attending the Royal Winnipeg Ballet Professional Division summer program.
The scholarship Winowich received would be used for a fall term at the ballet if she attends.
Winowich's scholarship is supported through the Saskatchewan Arts Bursaries component of the 2005 Canada Summer Games Building dreams and Champions program. The scholarship provides financial assistance to Saskatchewan students training for careers as professional artists.
The Saskatchewan Arts Board's mission is to cultivate an environment in which the arts thrive for the benefit of everyone in Saskatchewan.
