Today in Toronto, two local teens, Siera Bearchell, 16, and Kelsey Keddy, 15, will be participating, along with 50 other girls from across the country, in the Miss Teen Canada World pageant.
The teens will judged in the categories of personal interview, evening gown, swimwear, charity contribution, public speaking, and photogenic appeal.
The girls can also compete in two optional categories - the talent competition and a written essay.
The pageant is open to teenage girls between the ages of 13 to 19.
According to the Miss Teen Canada World website, the pageant gives the girls an opportunity to "stand up, stand out and be their own kind of beautiful" by providing them with the opportunity to grow and be a positive role model in their community.
Bearchell is an accomplished dancer. She has performed for more than 13 years, during which time she has received numerous awards and scholarships. She has choreographed many dance numbers for school productions.
She is also an undefeated city champion golfer in her age group for the last two years.
Bearchell, who was a grade 10 student at A.E. Peacock Collegiate last academic year, holds high academic standards.
Last February, Bearchell's family lost their home to a fire. Since then she has been helping people who have face similar situations by working with the Red Cross.
Keddy was the winner of the 15 Wing Youth Volunteer of the Year Award for 2008. She volunteers at many places including the Humane Society, Joe's Place Youth Centre, the Military Family Resource Centre and the Soul's Harbour soup kitchen.
Keddy attended École Ducharme where she took an advanced mathematics program.
At the 2009 provincial Expo Science, she received the Canadian Cancer Society's Award for the intermediate level. She aspires to become a pediatrician.
The winner of the pageant will represent Canada for one year and qualify for the International Miss Teen World Pageant.
