A Moose Jaw area artist is celebrating after winning a prestigious award at the Canadian Grand National Quilt Show in Kitchener, Ontario.
Anna Hergert, of Sand Point Beach, won the Award of Excellence with her piece called Icebergs and Cool Breezes.
The Canadian Grand National features juried work of Canadian fibre artists on the 2010 theme of ‘Off the Wall’.
The exhibition will be on display until June 13.
Hergert’s work, which included glass embellishments by another local artist Sue Hunchuk, was inspired by a recent trip to Newfoundland.
“What inspired me was the colours,” Hergert told the Times-Herald.
During her trip, she was able to see many icebergs up close.
“The colours were turquoise and that’s what I’ve used. It was just beautiful.”
Hergert said she was surprised and thrilled to win.
“It’s an art quilt. It’s 36 inches high and 44 inches wide. The materials I used are hand dyed cotton fabrics and I overlayed them in polyester sheers to get some of the sparkle and then added the glass embellishments,” she said.
“It took 50 hours of straight work to make the piece,” she said.
