Spencer Asuchak of the Prince George Cougars was suspended for eight games Monday for failing one of the Canadian Hockey League’s mandatory drug tests.

Asuchak tested positive for methylhexaneamine. The drug is a stimulant that was banned by the World Anti-Doping Association in 2009.

The Canadian Press reports that he is the third player this month to receive a suspension for testing positive for the drug. Plymouth Whalers centre Alex Aleardi and Saginaw Spirit defenceman Ryan O’Connor are also sitting out for eight games.

The Canadian Press reported that officials believe all three players inadvertently took the drug through a tainted supplement.

The eight game suspension is the automatic punishment for a failed drug test. A second offence warrants a 25-game suspension.

Players are randomly tested during the season. Typically one player per team is chosen at random. Spencer Edwards was recently tested following a Warriors home game.
