A local crematorium will soon be offering Moose Jaw Funeral Home customers more funeral options .

During the Feb. 9 council meeting, council passed a a zoning bylaw amendment allowing Moose Jaw Funeral Home to build a crematorium at 268 Mulberry Lane. This week, business co-owner Jeff Ofstie said the new facility should be fully constructed by the end of the year and open in January, offering improved cremation services for Moose Jaw residents who are planning funeral arrangements.

Right now, the funeral home is waiting on crews to connect waterlines to the property. After that time, Ofstie said crews can pour cement and start erecting the structure.

He added, once complete, the crematorium will offer better scheduling options for customers wanting to cremate loved ones remains, because the funeral home won’t have to contract out cremations.

Here is an article from the Memorial Society of BC. http://www.memorialsocietybc.org/c/g/cremation-report.html If you read the end... "Conclusion and recommendations: Crematoria have the potential to have a negative impact on public health. There is a lack of emission data of existing facilities in Canada and North America. The few emission studies that have been done are on new facilities. Internationally there is clearly a concern around the polluting capacity of crematoria. Crematoria emissions are strictly regulated in most European countries, Japan, and Hongkong. In Canada and the USA, emissions of crematoria are ‘assumed’ to have only a small impact on public health. Crematoria should use the best available technology economically achievable to reduce air pollutant emissions and should operate at an optimal level with strict temperature control to obtain complete combustion. Minimum operating temperatures, minimum oxygen levels, maximum carbon monoxide levels, maximum opacity measures, maximum PM levels should be established based on work in other jurisdictions. A crematorium should not be cited [sic] close to a neighborhood. Stack emissions and ambient air quality should be monitored before and after a crematorium starts functioning."

LOL @ MR TRUTH's little rib. I feel bad for the folks who live in the areas adjacent to it. Between the soot messing up their properties and the poor air quality, this will likely be a sore spot for many for a long time to come. I don't understand why the city would allow this type of zoning exemption, but I guess if we've learned anything over this last term, it's that rational thinking in regards to zoning and location eludes this group. On the bright side, maybe hosing prices will go down in that area, and some people will be able to upgrade(if it is indeed an upgrade at that point in time) to a nicer part of town. That, and it's conveniently located next to Mulberry Estates. The added air pollution may be partially offset by the non-necessity for residents there to ride the shuttle bus downtown to plan for the inevitable. I guess we'll just have to wait and see how this one plays out.

Hey if we have a multiplex downtown why not a Crematorium right into town also. Build it and they will come. They say there will be no smell from this - is it worth the risk!

I'd like to say I'm surprised, but all but 2 people on council have no regard for what's best for the city. I wish council could think about the future and what's best for the citizens. Too bad, it's too late now, better luck with the next bunch of faces on council...
