PRAGUE, Czech Republic - The Czech Republic's environment ministry has approved the controversial renovation of a power plant.

Environment Minister Rut Bizkova said Thursday a plan by the power utility CEZ AS was approved to renovate the lignite-fired Prunerov plant, the Czech Republic's biggest greenhouse gases producer.

It was protested by environmentalists who claimed the renovation would not use the best available technologies.

The case made news internationally after a tiny Pacific island republic of Micronesia in the western Pacific Ocean officially asked the ministry to stop the plan because of the potential cross-border impact of carbon emissions from the plant.

Bizkova replaced Jan Dusik who resigned last month over a disagreement about the renovation.
