One of 11 statues handed out at the 2013 Moose Jaw Business Excellence Awards at Heritage Inn Wednesday. The gala drew a sold-out crowd of 400 business leaders, politicians and other public figures.
The Moose Jaw Business Excellence Awards (MJBEX) showcases the best of the best in Moose Jaw.
“We have to acknowledge the success and everything else that’s going on in our city. We want to just promote the city itself,” said Brian Martynook, CEO of the Moose Jaw and District Chamber of Commerce. “This way we can, by showing what business are doing out there, especially in the new businesses, community involvement and customer service categories. It just shows that these businesses are taking a value in our community.”
The nomination deadline for the awards is Jan. 31. The winners will be announced at a dinner on April 16 at the Heritage Inn starting at 6 p.m.
Martynook said so far, one-third of the expected applications are in. Usually the chamber receives about 50 nominations in all categories.
There are 12 categories this year, including two new ones. The new categories are Green Business of the Year and Heritage Award. The other 10 categories are Community Involvement, Customer Service, Young Entrepreneur, Business Innovation, Marketing, New Business Venture, Job Creation, Pioneer, Business Leader of the Year and Business of the Year.
For the Young Entrepreneur category, nominees must be age 25 or younger as of Dec. 31, 2013.
“Business, you know, can nominate themselves,” said Martynook. “The winners of last year cannot go into the same category. They can go into another category if they wish.”
An anonymous group of five business individuals will come up with the finalists and will decide the winners. The group is not associated with the chamber board and it will use the criteria described on the nomination form.
“It’s also great PR for the business (nominees) and for their employees,” said Martynook. “It puts a feather in their hat (when) their employees see that the place where they work is an MJBEX nominee.”
Applications are available online at mjchamber.com or contact the chamber office at 306-692-6414. Martynook said the chamber would also be happy to answer any questions anyone might have.
