REGINA - The Saskatchewan government is allowing livestock producers to graze their animals on about 100,000 acres of Crown land to help them cope with pastures hit by drought.
"We are trying to do everything we can right now and hopefully we get as much rain as we can immediately," said Agriculture Minister Bob Bjornerud.
Producers have been struggling with dry land and are running out of pasture in some of the most drought-stricken areas of the province.
Parts of west-central Saskatchewan have been the hardest hit, including Rosetown and Biggar.
Bjornerud said ministry officials would tour some of the most troubled areas next week.
He noted that cattle producers would likely be the most common applicants for the land, but all producers were welcome to apply.
Producers who are interested in the program can apply starting Monday and grazing will be available until September 15.
