In April approximately 200 workers from the XL Beef Plant here in Moose Jaw were handed layoff notices. At the time the plant employees were told they would be back at work in approximately five months, starting on Sept. 28. The XL Foods release sent out Monday said as of Friday, due to the inability to reach a collective agreement with the Moose Jaw plant’s workers’ union, UFCW Canada Local 1400, the company locked the workers out.
XL Beef employees locked out even before returning from layoff
Last week it was reported XL Beef staff in Moose Jaw could be returning to work in less than a week, however, according to a release sent out by the plant’s owner XL Foods Inc., this is not going to be the case.

To those that are commenting on XL Beef. Unless you know what you are talking about, because you have personal knowledge, don't flap too soon. Thank you Cory for sticking up for them. TO LEE YA...Lakeside is unionized, so I don't know where you got your info from. And to BILL, who says that people waited around for the beef plant to open. Who said that people opted to NOT take EI. FLAP, FLAP, FLAP...Please, everyone, do your research and know what you are talking about before you make yourself LOOK like a fool. Unless you are one of them (or maybe even US) you have no idea what you are talking about. Unless you know what they are requiring of these people and the labour practices that they are instituting on them, you have no right to pass judgment. Please have some compassion for these people who have just lost their livelihoods and may not know where they next meal may be coming from, or if they are going to have a roof over their heads to keep themselves and thier children warm at night. GOOD LUCK XL BEEF employees. I will be praying that it all works out for you. I know what you are going through. I know the jobs that you do out there and how straining it can be on your bodies, minds and emotions. I was one of you...

I can't beleive anyone waited around for a job when they got laid off. Everyone knew it was not going to open again. You mean some of you did not go on EI and hung out for months with no cash just waiting..I don't believe it..no one is that stupid are they? Well this is saskatchewan and I guess anything is possible. I can't see why anyone would cry, the jobs were mostly $10 an hour and McDonalds pays better. If XL Foods didn't even want to pay $10 now then go get a job somewhere else instead of sitting at home crying.

I just wish all you people who have a problem with XL would get over it. So what they are a greedy company, its not like there companies who aren't. Instead of complaining about the situation, offer a solution, otherwise keep it to yourself. Good luck to all the former employees, and those who are going back. Think about what values you have, and what is most important to you before making a decision on the contract. All the best to all.

Well B from Moose Jaw, Sask, if Bill 80 strops these the likes of these Policemen or Firemen unions from holding us taxpayers ransom, I say bring it on the sooner the better.

No one on this blog is mentioning or doesn't care about the anti union government that some have elected in this province. Take a close look at what Wall and Co. are trying to push through in the construction industry in the name of Bill 80.( Read it through). This could quite conceivably be adapted to every workplace in the province. These beef plant workers won't have the option of being unionized in the union of their choice. Welcome to low wage, no benefit, no pension jobs. Good luck Boys and Girls, you're going to need it.

I guess if the contract expired while you were on layoff, this isn't exactly unfair labor practice, but if XL beef is tearing up your collective agreement, it'll end up in court. Good luck to you all. Lee, brooks is unionized...people died for it.

There is lots out there for people to get help, food, friendship and support. The Carreer Development center next to the post office is a great place to start. If you can think of some type of education you want to do, ex ~ pilot, engineer, computer programing, website design..... the list goes on. anyway there is funding that the gov' offers for these types of training...... Ceck out the food cupboard/ welcome wagon in the phonebook Good luck. My point is that it's time to move on from what has happened, Find an open door and step on through.

well i guess you former xl workers(slave labourers) would have started looking for work and used your layoffs to your advantages ,but no summer off sounded too good. well now this sounds like a cartoon i seen when i was a small bow about the worker ants and a grasshoper .winters cuming but how about your next pay check ware is that coming from? the government cant be held responsible for you so get out and take xl's hint they have a big ass new plant in brooks with no union and they employ people that dont even speak english or know about labour laws they are holding out for the union to move out and so thay can hire the same cind of guys hereand only pay them minimum wage. and yes ive worked thair befor and i luckally quit just last december.

It is sad to see this thing take place. It is sad to see these people now out of work and maybe now not able to collect E.I. - EI doesn't fund people in labour disputes - hopefully something can be done about this. They were laid off first, then locked out. It wasn't by their chice or doing. Maybe they can go to a certain former early 1980's Moose Jaw TH reporter, Garry, if the rumours are true, and ask him for a loan from the $23 million he won on last Saturday's Super Seven draw. Let's hope he does not forget us here and decides to invest in some sort of business. Also hoping the luck rubs off on others from this city who are hurting.

Big suprise, locked out can't say people didn't see this one coming after xl got there hands on the plant in brooks. I seen this one coming after they closed the boning plant and telling people it was cheaper to truck it to the plant in calgary. The brothers in crime pulled a fast one and got away with it again, thank the goverment for selling the two plants and giving them some cash for buying and putting everyone that worked there out of work. Then lets not forget the fab five who voted to upgrade the sewer system at your expense, i think to the ring of like 5 million was it not, except for one council member who wanted some kinda deal in writing that xl was gonna even stay in moose jaw. If the plant reopens the employee's well more then likely have to take a pay cut as a sign of the times of a bad economy. Once again way to go fab five under there guidence moose jaw has seen more plant closures then any city council before it and no growth, but you guys now locked out still get to pay tax and enjoy a mutliplex.

Hey bryan, do some research on the place before you open your lips and start running your trap, most jobs there start at about 12 or 13 dollars an hour and top out around 18 or 19. So do you and your no research i say shut up, i have worked there in the past don't now and haven't in 8 years but i made good money there so do some research before you open your mouth.
