Norm Neault, Local 1400 of the United Food and Commercial Workers union president, told the Times-Herald these most recent actions followed the workers rejecting the employer’s recent offer during a meeting on Sunday.
Neault said XL staff decided they would start picketing later this week, due to the company locking them out of the plant and offering to reopen the plant is workers accepted a deal that did not.
An XL Foods release sent out last week said as of Sept. 18, due to the inability to reach a collective agreement with the Moose Jaw plant's workers’ union, the company released a lockout notice.
XL Foods said it is prepared to recommence operations in Moose Jaw. However, it requires a union contract “that will allow (the company) to be competitive in the marketplace.”
