Aside from severely damaging a 95-year-old local provincial and municipal heritage property, Thursday evening's fire caused another problem - it clogged up the surrounding area storm sewer.
Ryan Johnson, city engineer, said city crews had to attend to clogged drain basins in the vicinity of the fire, as the large amount of water firefighters used on the blaze caused debris, leaves and other clippings to wash into the sewer grates, clogging them.
However, Johnson said the procedure for clearing out the basins was rather simple, with crews taking an industrial vacuum truck and sucking out the debris Thursday night. On Friday, crews went back to make sure the basins were still clear.
