First thing is first — talk to the school division.
During Monday’s executive committee meeting, councillors and the mayor received an engineering department report regarding the process required to submit the Ross School building for government funding consideration as an affordable housing project.
Municipal planner Michelle Sanson told the executive committee the city doesn’t actually own the school. Therefore, in order for it to make any funding application, the first step is to discuss the matter with Prairie South School Division to see if the building is even available for affordable housing.
“These may be much more appropriate bodies than the city.” - Glenn Hagel
Therefore, administration recommended the executive committee contact the public school division to discuss the availability of Ross School.
Mayor Glenn Hagel supported the motion, as did everyone else at the meeting (Coun. Brian Swanson was absent). However, he said the administration report seems to suggest the city would assume ownership of the Ross School through this process.
The mayor said a private developer or non-profit organization could also develop the building for affordable-housing purposes.
