As of the end of July, more businesses were opening in Moose Jaw than closing in 2009. In total, 222 opened during that time period, while 72 closed.
According to a recent Moose Jaw and District Chamber of Commerce report, 91 businesses that earn $50,000 or less revenue a year opened in the Friendly City between Jan. 1 and July 31. Only 31 businesses in that same category closed during the same time period.
For businesses earning between $50,000 and $500,000 a year, 50 opened locally during the first seven months of 2009, while 31 closed. Over that same time period, 64 home businesses opened, while 24 closed. As well, 14 new transient businesses opened, while six closed.
One category where more businesses shut down locally than opened up between January and July was for businesses earning over $500,000 a year. While three such businesses opened, four closed.
However, chamber executive director Brian Martynook told the Times-Herald one of those larger businesses closing down earlier this year was XL Beef, and the chamber is still confident that company will resume operations locally later this month (as the company indicated at the time of its April closure).
For the most part, Martynook said more businesses are opening in Moose Jaw than are closing this year, which he believes indicates entrepreneurial confidence in the city. He added the types of businesses opening locally vary greatly, from food distributors to clothing stores, home inspection companies to renters.
Martynook said some of the local businesses that closed during the first seven months of 2009 were replaced by new businesses offering the same service.
According to the chamber executive director, most new businesses that fail do so at about the three-year mark. He said that's usually the point when, if a business hasn't built an adequate client base, the cost of bills will be higher than the revenue.

Excellent? Excellent? This is the same fire dept that let main street burn to the ground wasn't it? The same force that will no longer inform the Red Cross of fires cause they didn't like their thunder getting stolen in the newspaper?

Was it the same police force that let a violent offender out to grab a few petty dealer names resulting in the murder of a woman in the city? The ones that needed tasers and glocks and harleys and million dollar encrypted radio systems? A few examples my friend.

d from moose jaw hit the nail on the head.
These people do an excellent job...and if you think you could do better, how about signing-up.

And enough with the comments using fake names. Sure is easy to insult people when no one knows your name.

Take your thoughts in person to the police and the firefighters.
