TORONTO - Air Canada travellers who fret over leaving Fifi at home when they fly can relax, the airline is once again allowing furry companions in its cabins.

The airline (TSX:AC.B) announced Wednesday that travellers can bring their cats or small dogs on the plane with them starting July 1 for a fee of $100 for domestic return flights and $200 for an overseas trip.

Passengers are asked to register their pets in advance, as a maximum of two animals are allowed on the smaller Jazz planes, with four allowed on the larger Air Canada flights.

The company has changed its policies on pets several times. In September 2006, the airline said it would no longer allow pets in the cabin due to allergy concerns.

Nine months later, the company said it wouldn't accept pets in the cargo hold either due to the need for more space for luggage.

Air Canada spokesman Peter Fitzpatrick said the reversal is part of a "renewed commitment to the customer" on the part of new president and CEO Calin Rovinescu.

He pointed to a new low-fare guarantee, the reversal of a decision to charge customers for a second bag and the elimination of call-centre fees as other customer-friendly steps the airline has taken.

"Like all businesses we constantly review and update our policies, and that's what's happened here," Fitzpatrick said Wednesday.

"It's all part of a general strategy that we have here to improve our relationships with our customers."

Air Canada has been struggling because of increasingly cut-throat competition from other airlines like WestJet, as well as the recession, the onset of the H1N1 influenza virus and rising fuel costs.

The cash-strapped airline says it is looking for $600 million in new funding. Finance Minister Jim Flaherty said Tuesday the federal government is in talks with the airline to provide it with millions of dollars in loans.

The company has also reached tentative deals with all five of its major unions that include a pension funding holiday and equity restructuring.

Airline analyst Jacques Kavafian said Air Canada's reversal on its pet policy is likely an attempt to win back customers that it lost to WestJet (TSX:WJA) when it started "nickel and diming" customers.

"It's part of their strategy to gain market share back that they lost to WestJet when they implemented all those policies, not necessarily only with the pets, but also other things, like call-centre fees and charging for pillows and blankets, things like that," Kavafian said.

"So they've eliminated a lot of the nickel and diming they were doing that annoyed passengers, they're removing those to gain passengers back."

WestJet has always allowed pets in its cabins, and spokesman Robert Palmer described it as "the pet-friendly airline."

While the concept of cats and dogs in such close proximity to travellers may raise concerns among allergy sufferers, Palmer said he rarely hears complaints from customers.

"We don't get a lot of feedback on that, surprisingly," he said. "If we do, what we try to do is we try to separate the two, the person with the animal and the person with the allergy. We put them as far apart as we possibly can."

"It's something that we get a lot of positive feedback on. People really appreciate the fact that they can bring their pets on board."

Fitzpatrick said Air Canada will also separate pet from allergy sufferers which, combined with the limit on the number of animals per flight, should be enough to assuage customers' concerns.

Jeff you have got to be kidding right? I am no fan of screaming anything but surely you are not comparing a child to an animal...... You can't ask people to put their 2 year old in a kennel when they go on holidays......

And if you think for a minute that people would be happy to have someone clean a kennel in an airplane washroom you need to take a poll.....

Actually Humberto I am comparing kids to animals. Not saying put them in kennels just make them mind. Many people's pets behave better than children whose parents let them do whatever they want. Ive been on flights where I didn't even know that there was a small animal in a kennel until we got off the plane and saw the cage, but kids' parents allowed them to climb on people's seats, watch movies without headphones and be generally whiny and obnoxious. Want an example of this, go to sidewalk days next week and see how many dogs are walking nicely on leash with owners cleaning up after them while unsupervised kids recklessly ride their bikes and litter.

I am a breeder and travel quite frequently with my dogs. I am assuming my having dogs in the cabin that they mean only small dogs. I don't have big dogs but I sure couldn't imagine having them in the cabin. They are crate trained and are happier in their crates. If more people would train their dogs to be put in crates on a regular basis things would be a lot easier. Personally I would like to see them lower the fee for a dog to go under the cabin so that more people would take advantage of that.

Does everyone not realize that Westjet (Air Canada's competitor) already allows pets in the cabin of their planes?

Ya know... what does it matter.
If people seriously have that bad of allergies to something they need to let it be known.
They dont ban strong purfumes on planes and look how many people have serious reactions to smells.
Dog/cat/child what ever... there could be worse things...

And lest anyone bring this up, I fully agree with seeing eye dogs and the like being allowed in the cabin.

Can't wait 'til the first pet craps in its cage at 39 thousand feet; or someone has a full blown allergic reaction. Air Canada must really be desperate for business.

So it comes down to this. The dog is more important to the air line because it pays for its seat. great maybe then all the money that this unorganized, ineffecient and pork barrelled airline needs should be paid by the pet lovers. Even a seeing eye dog should go into the cargo hold where the animals have always gone. Shame on that person and boo hoo to cramping your style if a baby should be upset. Remember the last time I counted a baby is part of someone's family and part of the human race, a dog or cat is content wherever it might kept. To me this issue ranks right up there , with holy cows, excessive body piercings and who might have caught the biggest fish. Air Canada why not try the novel idea of being efficent like your competitors.

Yeah I ahte to sound like a pet hater but I have been on interrnational flights of 9 hours and more. Why should passengers have to smell a pet that goes in its kennel? Or a dog that won't be quiet? I really think we are taking this pet owners have rights thing a bit too far.

The whole world is pretty screwed up when Michael Vick can get 2 years for dog fighting (deserved) yet Donte Stallworth gets 30 days yesterday for driving drunk and killing a human being.

Give me a dog or cat over a crying baby or whiny , misbehaving kid anyday. If the pet goes in the small kennel the owner can go the bathroom to clean it up just like a baby who soils their diaper. People with allergies could die from someone bringing a peanut butter sandwich on the plane, maybe we should ban those on planes too. After 8 hrs on a plane I guarantee there will be people that smell worse than the pets.
