Moose Jaw - Moose Jaw businesses are tightening their belts but 2009 is still shaping up to be a good year.
"We're optimistic. We're hoping the ripple effect from the east won't be a big factor," said Brian Martynook, executive director of the Moose Jaw and District Chamber of Commerce.
Recent economic trouble south of the border and in Central and Eastern Canada has Moose Jaw businesses crossing their fingers.
The chamber is preparing for big construction projects, upcoming seminars and annual awards. Construction projects including the multiplex and River Street developments are expected to help spur employment numbers, according to Martynook.
"We're hoping the multiplex decision gets settled. It will help local businesses and create jobs on the construction end," Martynook said.
The Little Chicago development on River Street West is a multimillion dollar project. Hotels are being knocked down and are to be replaced by a new entertainment district. Martynook sees it as a boon to local businesses and a way to attract tourists.
On Jan. 22, the chamber will hand out its annual citizen and group of the year awards.

It isn't only economic trouble south of the border and in Central and Eastern Canada that you hope won't have a ripple effect in Moose Jaw.
How do you expect there to be no ripple effect when this is a worldwide economic crisis. This downturn is not only south of the border or in eastern Canada. Toyota in Japan just closed it's factories for 11 days until the backlog of cars is sold. This is only one example that people are not buying. Large retail stores are closing or going bankrupt.
Being close to the border, if Moose Jaw is relying on tourists from south of the border, this is when you will see the ripple effect. During a recession people will not be taking pleasure trips.
Might be better to spend money and create jobs on infrastructure; the road are terrible in Sask. And on Mental Health services -- there is a Mental Health Crisis in Canada and even worse in rural areas.

Really sharp economic insight associated with short term gain - for a few wheelers, dealers and builders - and guaranteed long term pain for all Moose Jaw Taxpayers!!

Tightening belts , , kind of sounds like we should not expect too much financial support from the chamber and its members for the mplex??
But then again that should be no surprise.
