REGINA - The union representing 12,600 Saskatchewan health workers says it's members have approved a strike mandate, but that doesn't mean they will hit the picket lines yet.

The Canadian Union of Public Employees says the workers voted 88 per cent in favour of taking job action.

The move comes as the union continues contract talks with the Saskatchewan Association of Health Organizations.

Gordon Campbell, president of CUPE's Health Care Council, says he hopes to see progress at the bargaining table this week.

Campbell says the union wants the association to drop what he calls "demands for major concessions" and to put a monetary offer on the table.

The health workers, including lab technicians, licensed practical nurses and other support staff, have been without an agreement for 15 months.

Sir Nerdington you need to get your facts straight.

SUN got a 35 percent contract. SUN represents most of the provinces nurses. What we are talking about here are licensed practical nurses, lab techs, etc. They have been without a contract since April 2008.

SAHO is dragging its feet and refusing to bargain because they know that with bills 5 and 6 they really do not need to bargain in good faith.

Most unions are not demanding a contract in the same neighbourhood as SUN's. But it is galling to be told there is no money and be offered 0, 0 and 1 percent increases when the LAs just gave themselves 3.3 percent indexed to inflation.

I have nothing but respect for our health care professionals. They have one of the hardest professions in the country.

However, if I recall correctly, didn't the nurses just get a massive pay increase last year? How much do they really need to make? They're constantly going on or threatening to strike, but they already make very good money and I'm sure their benefits are excellent.

I know I will get flamed for saying all this, but it really is time to stop with the constant greediness in our health care system. Going on strike every few years so you can get massive pay raises is just not right.

    Flame away.
