COCHRANE, Alta. - A 19-year-old skateboarder who was lying on his board while going down a hill on a secondary highway was killed when he was struck from behind by an SUV.

RCMP say the incident happened about 10 p.m. on Tuesday night on Highway 1A near Cochrane, Alta.

Paramedics declared the young man, a resident of nearby Morley, dead at the scene.

The driver and lone occupant of the SUV, a 49-year-old female from Morley, was not injured.

RCMP say they don't anticipate charges will be laid.

Todd- I take offence to your comment...if the family of this young man were to read that comment I feel as though they would also take offence. Yes...I am sure the driver is traumatized by this event- as many are including the family of the young man who passed. While roads are built for auto traffic there are now many other modes of transportation. This young man clearly did not mean for this to happen and this is devastating.

This poor driver must be traumatized by this incident. This is enough to make a person quit driving for life. Last time I checked the roads were built for auto traffic.

Lynn..... you can add cold and heartless to your list of symptoms when you visit your doctor. The kid (young man) didn't make a very good decision and obviously he paid for it with his life. It is a very sad and traumatic story for everyone involved. My sympathies go out to his family as well as the driver who hit him.

Me... unfortunatly todd does make a point. And in your comment... roads are built for auto traffic there are now many other modes of transportation... do you think lying down on a skate board street lugeing is considered a form of safe transportation?????
Highway 1a near cochrane is a very busy and fast paced highway... and a young man on a skateboard on the side is taking a huge risk as even when bike riders are riding along the highway they were reflective gear and helmets.
This wasnt some 15 yr old who purhaps didnt think of the consequences... this was a young 19 yr old man who definatly should have known better and its very unforunate that he did not. He was acting stupidly and this accident WAS VERY PREVENTABLE!! I cannot help but feel extremly sorry for the poor driver who is tramatized and will have to live with this for the rest of his life!!
I feel bad for the family but maybe there is a lesson to be learned here... a person LYING!!!!!! on a skate board going aproximatly 30 km per hr on a highway where the posted speed limit 110 km per hr for vechiles is not a very wise decision... He was lying on a skateboard... how in the world would anyone expect to see a teenage whose probably not wearing any protective gear nor reflective gear to be noticed!!!
Consequences arise from stupid decisions and this 19 yr old should have known better!

    Sk Woman....
feel how you must... doesnt change the fact that this was preventable and his actions have not only devestated his family but have also caused not only a poor innocent driver his sanity but also a life long battle against Post Tramatic StressDisorder that will forever rule his life....

ps-if you dont like someones point of view deal with it... freedom of speech baby!
