Andrew Nikiforuk, author of Tar Sands: Dirty Oil and the Future of a Continent, spoke about Alberta's tar sands development and what he says is the need for Canadians to adopt healthier energy practices during his presentation at the Moose Jaw Public Library on Friday.
During his presentation, Nikiforuk said the Alberta government reduced its royalties on tar sand development to encourage oil companies to come into the province's north in the '90s.
Over the past several years, he said those companies have used methods that aren't environmentally ideal to turn the tar sands bitumen material into usable oil, with the side effects ranging from lakes of hazardous by-product to escaping steam from underground extraction practices damaging the northern Alberta ecosystem.
