Moose Jaw-Wakamow NDP MLA Deb Higgins thinks her party needs a feminine leadership look.
"I truly believe the NDP is the party of equity and it's time to have a female face," she told the Times-Herald on Friday.
Her gender is just one of the reasons Higgins thinks she is the ideal leader candidate.
"I have the experience and I have a lifelong dedication, not only to the party, but the province of Saskatchewan."
That is why the former provincial cabinet minister is vying to lead her party following its annual convention in June, when party members will choose the new official opposition party leader.
Also competing for the NDP leadership are Yens Pedersen, Ryan Meili and Dwain Lingenfelter.
So far this week, Higgins and the other potential NDP leaders have attended official party forums in North Battleford and Prince Albert. There is another forum in Saskatoon today, as well as Yorkton on Monday, Swift Current on Wednesday and Regina on Thursday.
Higgins said a surprisingly large percentage of party members have yet to decide who they will support for leader. She added a large number of questions asked during the forums is regarding the province's possible nuclear program.
Her own belief is there isn't a strong enough business case for nuclear energy in Saskatchewan and the government should be investigating more alternative renewable energy sources.
She said the current Saskatchewan Party government is also making too many decisions outside the realm of public scrutiny.
Higgins said the NDP leadership race is strengthening the party overall.
When asked who she would support for party leader if she were not to win, Higgins said it's too early for her to make such an endorsement, as she believes she has a very strong chance of winning.
However, whoever wins the leadership race, Higgins said all candidates will get behind the leader and work with the party for the betterment of Saskatchewan.
Any member of the NDP is welcome to attend the annual party convention in Regina on June 6, where members will be able to vote.
However, in order to vote for the leadership, Saskatchewan residents must attain their NDP membership by April 24. For more information, visit www.saskndp.com.

There is absolutely a strong business case for the use of nuclear energy. Saskatchewan has the richest uranium mines in the world, and could cheaply produce enough clean energy to satisfy its own needs, and have excess energy to sell to the United States and the Alberta Oil Sands. Alberta is considering building a Nuclear Plant to fuel its Oil Sands, if Sask builds first, they could provide that power for a profit.

A woman who had the audacity to tell teachers to 'just claim more overtime' while acting as Minister of Labor shouldn't be leading a group of ducklings let alone a political party, or heaven forbit the province. Teachers don't get overtime Deb - if you didn't do that homework, you sure as heck can't do the homework that is required to lead a province.

I would vote for a safeway employee any day of the week. The Sheeple on this forum seem to forget or more likely never new that their current chose for premiers qualifications only include disc jockey for an radio station and Bagman who couriered expense monies out the back doors of Devines ministers offices.
You will have to go back to your radios and ask Gormlie what to think next, and post again. -
