REGINA - Saskatchewan's energy minister says his province is very close to beating Alberta in the production of conventional oil.

Bill Boyd says output in this sector is increasing in Saskatchewan, but is going in the opposite direction in Alberta.

Boyd notes that last year, Saskatchewan produced 161 million barrels of oil.

The energy minister also says his province is in a good position to weather the drop in oil prices because of the energy industry's continued interest in Saskatchewan.

He points to the southeastern corner of the province, which accounts for 50 per cent of Saskatchewan's oil production.

Boyd was speaking following an appearance at an energy conference in Regina which is focusing on the latest research and technologies to extract oil and gas.

This is normal, alberta is good for a few years, than sask, than back to alberta. The only reason why people are noticing now, is because people pay more atttention..

I wouldn't be bragging up this province to much, i work for north america's second largest drilling rig contractor and as of now they only have 8 rigs drilling, 7 in Alberta and 1 in Sask. and the one in Sask is drilling potash.

Jess from Sask writes: This is normal, alberta is good for a few years, than sask, than back to alberta.

LOL, , No this is not normal. This is because the Sask NDP lowered royalty rates just prior to being booted out of office and the Alberta Conservatives raised royalty rates due to public outcry.

This decrease in royalty rates is also why Sask is supposedly enjoying such good economic times. The Sask party was just lucky enough to show up once all the money started rolling in. It`s easy to spend the money when it is there, but it is another to do the ground work to ensure the money is there.
