Moose Jaw - Moose Jaw property owners started paying a little more for some utility services on Thursday.
Water and sewage rate increases took effect on New Year's Day, resulting in a 10 per cent water service increase and a 15 per cent sewage rate increase.
Residential water now costs about 53 cents per cubic metre, while fixed fees increased to $38.13 per billing. Residential sewage now costs about 58 cents per cubic metre, while fixed fees increased to $21.81 per billing.
Industrial water rates increased to about 53 cents per cubic metre for the first 68,355 cubic metres used and about 55 cents per cubic metre for anything more.
Industrial sewer rates increased to about 58 cents per cubic metre for the first 68,355 cubic metres processed and about 60 cents per cubic metre for anything more.
Brian Acker, the city's financial services director, said council is introducing the rate increases over the next few years to cover the costs of local utility projects such as new sewer lines and the wastewater treatment plant project, as well as upgrades at the Buffalo Pound Lake water treatment facility.
Rather than just figure out how to pay for these multimillion dollar projects once completed, Acker said council decided in 2007 to introduce the costs gradually over several years.
"What council is doing is basically planning ahead."

It is no surprise to me about increases, we see it all the time. Unfortunately i have been noticing alot of wasted monies which lately have me cranky... A few years back our street on the east side was redone. Since then the street has been dug up too many times to count and now the street is worse than ever. It feels like you are going over a roller coaster and the patch jobs are just that. Why redo the street than tear the crap out of it because you didnt think that the 50 year old lines werent that bad ? Honestly People, We work hard for our Money, if the crews would have asked the residents hmm we are thinking of putting a new road down for you!!!! What do you think about that!! Most of the residents would have told them umm maybe we should replace what is wrong underneath and then we would love a new Road. Our taxes on this block have gone up 200+ dollars and we still have crap for sewer lines, a waste of a new road and now an increase to sewer. I feel sorry for everyone, you work hard, try not to complain while everything goes up except your wage. These arent new problems, where is City councils priorities and How can we keep them on track it will take decades to fix.

What are you complaining about Bugsy? Us seniors should get a 3 or 4 dollar raise this month. That will take care of the power raise, water raise, with lots left over for the 10% raise in taxes for our much needed disasterplex. BUT I'm forgetting.......us seniors on fixed incomes shouldn't complain about little increases because its for the good of all people. SORRY !!!!!!

NO, unfortunately, as much as I'd like to say our council is cleverly conning the taxpayer. And cleverly putting away money for their monument to stupid.

They are in fact playing CATCH UP for the last ten years of neglect.

See, while our Council was playing carnival to every Tom, D ick and Harry that came off the No. 1, they neglected simple responsibilites like RUNNING A CITY.

Lest we forget our ridiculous Tourism centre, the multicutural center and the ceiling that cost so much they couldn't afford to carpet the theatre, and the prairie arts festival(that took a long walk off a short peer, I don't think Tom cochrane is coming back...).

So now they open up the streets look at the pipes and what do you think they found?

It's like the kid that never wants to clean his room, the crap piles and piles until the space becomes uninhabitable...

Be nice to see a change in priorities in the new year.

What city council is doing is taxing ahead.

They know they are handcuffing Moose Jaw with the tens of millions of dollars they are planning on spending on the arena and soccer facilities. In order to do anything else, they will have to tax the citizens into the poorhouse.

Get used to it. This is the tip of a very large iceberg.
