Service with a smile awards are handed out regularly in the community for front-line employees who show happiness in their work and share that happiness with their customers.
Another award that might be considered by a community agency would be a prize for the front-line employees who are able to provide the most knowledge of the community to visitors who ask directional questions and want informational answers.
Gas station attendants, store clerks and restaurant servers have unique opportunities to present their community in the best light possible to visitors who stop by during the tourist season.
These individuals should be provided with basic knowledge of what Moose Jaw and area has to offer. They should be able to provide directions to tourist stops such as the Sukanen Ship Pioneer Village and Museum or the Western Development Museum.
They should be able to help visitors find their way to Buffalo Pound Provincial Park or to the various campgrounds here and nearby.
If employees don't take the initiative themselves to learn about their community, perhaps employers should take the time to provide some extra knowledge training. It will, after all, put that business in a favourable position, for tourists tend to remember the service they received and the extra attention to extraneous details that is provided by employees who understand the real depth of customer service.
Business operators who provide this extra service understand the competition factor and will reap the benefits of the extra time spent educating front-line employees.
