The Bank of Montreal building on High Street West won't be vacant for long when the bank moves to a new Manitoba Street location on Monday.
The Chow and Company law firm and some partners have acquired the bank building, said David Chow.
"(The purchase is) part of changes we will be announcing formally later on," said Chow.
The law firm has grown since occupying a former residence in 1999.
"We had four lawyers and one secretary. Now we have five lawyers, an articling lawyer and seven secretaries. We're shoehorning people into space."
The firm will move from 2,500 square feet of space to 6,000 square feet on the bank building's main floor.
The vaults will be invaluable for secure storage of files, he said.
The Bank of Montreal will move into a $1.4 million space with the city's first drive-through automated bank teller on Manitoba Street, just east of the liquor store.
The High Street heritage bank building was purchased from the Royal Bank in the 1970s. Bank services were located on three floors.
All services in the new bank will be on one floor.

will the former Chow law offices on high street be sold soon or remain vacant while the city attempts to determine how to accommodate parking for the multiplex. having a parkade only a block away from the multiplex would be a great place for it. too bad the aren't planning for any. ill be disappointed if i have to walk in winter.

I'm confused. Chow has been saying in council building the multiplex downtown makes sense because Chilliwack did it and saw an increase in traffic for the businesses in the area.
With such an expected increase in business in the area, why would the Chow Law Offices up and move? They are only a block away from the multiplex site, they should see the biggest increase in business. If size was a problem just add on.
I know why they are moving, because the story about the multiplex increasing business in the area is made up cockamamie.
Put your money where your mouth is councilor Chow and stay put if you believe your own claims about the multiplex increasing area business. None of the rest of believe you. -

What is wrong with some of you people? My family and I just moved here from Saskatoon and one of the lawyers at Chow's office handled to purchase of our new home. They were completely professional and very accomodating. It does not surprise me in the least to hear that they are a thriving business that is expanding into a larger office. Yet this is how you treat them - slap them in the face for their successes and try rain on their parade? Shame on you! Why not congratulate them and share in what I'm sure must be an exciting time. After all, the building looks beautiful (at least from what I've seen on the outside) and I seriously doubt that Chow's office was the only business vying for its purchase. If the commercial market in MJ is anything like S'toon, then I'm betting their isn't a lot of options for businesses looking to expand into larger space and when a building like that one comes available owners jump at it. I say good for you Chow & Co. and ignore those people who are sour about your successes just because they may be unhappy about their own lot in life!

Carlton, the building he bought is only one half block from the site of the new multimess. And they will build it downtown at any cost. It is also a lot bigger than the older building (which they probably still own and will make a great parking lot for the multimess). I have heard rumours of what will be going into the new BMO building but will not repeat them here. However, their purchase of the BMO was known over a month ago to those of us in the know.

I'm glad Chow bought the building instead so it will continue to be used. The last thing we need downtown is another vacant old building. Multiplex must go downtown. Success in major cities putting it there. Not a success in S'toon.
Why did city allow new BMO building to look nothing like an old building. Should have a bylaw forcing new buildings in proximity to old built to look like old ones. -

I like the attitude of the man that moved from Saskatoon. I know the laywers at Chow & Co. and every one of them has work very hard for what they have accomplished. What the hell does their success have to do with the Multiplex?? NOTHING!!!! It is a very petty person who would say negative things about someone because they are succeeding in life. This is their livelyhood, and they have all worked for this. Good for them! I hope the entire staff enjoys the new accomodations. The rest of you should just grow up.

Since when does a business buying another building worthy of a news story? Oh wait...it's Chow. If he didn't get this in the paper, then people may not know when it comes time to sell his old building to the city for a good coin. Duh. Nice fair reporting.
