KANDAHAR, Afghanistan - Canadian soldiers will be offering the H1N1 vaccine to Afghan detainees in their custody.

Suspected Taliban members being held by Canadian Forces in Kandahar will have the opportunity to be immunized beginning Wednesday.

The military's medical staff sought legal advice before going forward with the vaccinations.

The army says it treats detainees as prisoners of war, and as such they are required under the Geneva Conventions to be given the same medical care as their captors.

In Canada, meanwhile, vaccine shortages have hampered the country's largest-ever mass vaccination effort, causing long lineups at overcrowded clinics.

Soldiers in Afghanistan began receiving their vaccinations last week.
