When the Oct. 24 civic election rolls around, councillor candidate Kristian Sjoberg will be just 35 years old. However, the fourth-generation Moose Javian told the Times-Herald his youth is an asset, and it is time for a new perspective from a demographic currently not part of local municipal politics.
“There seems to be a lack of representation in that age category,” he said, adding there are major issues he hopes to address if elected to the next city council.
For example, during his four-year term Sjoberg said he would address a multi-decades old neglect towards replacement of outdated water and sewer infrastructure throughout Moose Jaw. He said some of the pipes are years past their life expectancy and the city is too slow to address the issue.
“It’s kind of a hidden time bomb.”
Sjoberg said the city has spent a lot of money on items the community “wants,” such as Mosaic Place and the field house, and now he believes it is time to invest in the city’s core “needs.” Sjoberg said ensuring clean drinking water is absolutely a vital concern for the City of Moose Jaw.
Currently employed with SaskTel, Sjoberg spent six years in Calgary where, among other things, he studied ecotourism at Mount Royal College.
“I didn’t like the big city. It was just too much.”
When Sjoberg returned to the Friendly City eight years ago, he brought with him his deep passion for the environment — a concern he has carried with him into his community involvements. Sjoberg is a member of both the municipal advisory committee on the environment, as well as the parks and recreation advisory committee.
