For the second straight year, Moose Jaw has two Male Athletes of the Year.
And once again Saskatchewan Roughriders' defensive tackle Scott Schultz is one of them.
Schultz and curler Pat Simmons split the honours as the Moose Jaw Times-Herald's Male Athlete award winner.
Simmons received two first place votes to tie Schultz who was voted second on all four ballots. Olympian and Cincinnati Reds baseball prospect James Avery was a close third as he also picked up a pair of first place votes.
Simmons had another remarkable curling season.
He and his foursome tied Bob Pickering's record by winning his fourth straight provincial Tankard.
At the Brier, Simmons finished second after the opening round, but suffered some misfortune in the 1-2 page playoff before bowing our in the national semifinal.
Simmons' rink also finished eighth on the World Curling Tour's money list last season.
Schultz helped anchor a Riders' defence that was once again one of the stingiest in the Canadian Football League. The Riders allowed the fewest yards of total offence in the league as they posted an 12-6 record and hosted a home playoff game for the second consecutive season.
A lean Schultz registered 20 tackles and a pair of sacks in his eighth season with the Riders.
Last year he and Dylan Barker split the award.
The panel of voters were Randy Palmer, Matthew Gourlie and Taylor Lambert from the Times-Herald sports department and T-H city editor Jason Small.
Avery was a key member of Canada's Olympic baseball team when they qualified for the Beijing Olympics. Avery started the opening game of the qualifying tournament in Taiwan - a Canadian win over Mexico - before earning the win in Canada's 4-3 victory over South Korea that earned them qualification.
In Beijing, Avery was the starting pitcher against the U.S. and left the game with a lead, but the Canadian team couldn't hold on for the victory.
Barker finished fourth in the balloting after he became the second Moose Javian - after Schultz - to be selected first overall in the CFL draft.
After a strong pre-season, Barker had his season end with a broken leg he suffered in the Hamilton Tiger-Cats final pre-season game.
Matt Delahey finished fifth in the voting after a strong season with the Western Hockey League's Regina Pats saw him drafted in the fourth round, 112th overall, by New Jersey.
Also receiving votes were Ken Bradley (golf), Jon Cotter (baseball, basketball), Doug Gillies (golf), Joel Jordison (curling), Adam Julian (volleyball), Joe McGrath (football), David Mitchell (lacrosse) and Moses Taban (boxing).
