Although becoming the grand madam president of a million-member organization was never the dream of one Moose Javian, it became a reality this summer.
And what a reality it has been.
"It is unbelievable," said Jean Kerr, the grand madam president of the Fraternal Order of Eagles (FOE) Ladies Auxiliary.
Kerr - a Moose Jaw native and long-time member of the international organization - said to have been selected by her peers for the highest honour one can achieve within the organization is not only humbling but amazing.
She is excited for the journey that will be the next year of her life and hopes to do the FOE proud.
Over the next year, Kerr will spend approximately 260 days travelling across North America, visiting FOE clubs, raising money for charity and working towards building the FOE's membership base.
"Oh, it is extremely exciting, a bit scary, but exciting. The only sad part is I will miss some of the small things at home, such as attending birthday parties and small celebrations."
Kerr said the whole experience has been a little overwhelming while at the same time amazing.
Having been an FOE member since 1975, Kerr has worked her way from the bottom to the top in 34 years.
And what a great 34 years it has been, said Kerr. She said over the years the FOE has become like a second family to her.
"We are a tight-knit group and over the years I have made a lot of friends - great friends - who would do anything for you."
She said one of the perks about being the grand madam president, "is you get to meet so many new, passionate people who share the desire to help others.
"The philosophy of the Eagles is 'people helping people.' To see how many lives the members of the (FOE) touch each year is heartwarming. The generosity will bring a tear to your eye."
As the grand madam president, Kerr has decided to dedicate her term to raising money for three particular charities.
One of those charities is a diabetes research centre to be named after the organization, and the other two are a memorial fund and youth alcohol and drug counselling centres.
As an organization, the FOE donates over $100 million annually to charities and individuals across both Canada and the United States. Kerr said she is honoured to have the opportunity to continue doing her part.

I was honored to help chauffeur Grand Madam President Jean Kerr for part of her travels in Kansas for the Fraternal Order of Eagles. I met her several years ago and was glad to have the opportunity visit with her and get to know her better. She is a lady of whom your city should be very proud.
