See what happens when you work together? The residents of South Hill who were worried about losing their high school did the right thing in trying to be constructive in dealing with the situation and it ended in a positive result.
When the Prairie South School Division laid out plans to turn Riverview Collegiate into a kindergarten to Grade 8 school and send all high school aged students on South Hill to either Peacock or Central, many residents of the area were outraged.
Those who were upset could have resorted to aggressive attacks and pushed the division to maintain the status quo. Instead, the community met, discussed the issue and came up with an alternative.
By putting forward the alternative in a positive manner, the division listened to the residents and agreed to the plan, with the hopes that making Riverview a Grade 7-12 school will increase its attendance. Over the past few years, attendance at the Grade 9-12 Riverview has declined.
Now, the board won't always be able to, or want to, do what area residents propose as alternatives to closure but what happened earlier this week proved that working together constructively with a school division can produce a result that pleases all involved.
