With the official launch of Moose Jaw's new automated garbage collection system less than a week away, the city still has a few issues to resolve, although none it can't handle, said City Engineer Ryan Johnson.
"Basically, everything we've run into, we've expected," he said after Monday's council meeting.
One problem is a low number of large residential garbage bins. Johnson said estimates conducted last year appear to be a bit off and, although there are still some 95-gallon bins in stock, they are almost gone.
However, with several smaller 65-gallon bins the city also distributed, everybody should still have a bin when the new garbage trucks start their routes on Monday.
Johnson encourages anyone who has a larger bin and wants a smaller one to call 694-4448. "That should make up for the shortfall."
Also, even if someone can't get a large bin now, that doesn't mean he or she couldn't get one in the future. City technician Carolyn Bowler said anyone can call the city and request a larger bin (or smaller one).
If the city doesn't have one available, those residents could receive their preferred bin when the next shipments arrive.
Johnson said the city expects to order replacement bins every year, totalling about five per cent of the entire number in the city, with the next ones to arrive in January.
Although there are some issues going into the new garbage collection system, Johnson said none of the problems are too serious. Also, for a smoother system transition, he suggests residents prepare for the switch.
Once the old garbage trucks collect their trash for the last time this week, Johnson said Moose Jaw residents should start filling their new solid waste bins in preparation for the automated pickup system.
The city engineer also reminds residents to place their bins in their proper location by next week.
"If you're (receiving) rear lane (pickup), make sure you wheel the container out into your back lane," he said.
Three of the four new automated garbage trucks are in Moose Jaw, ready to go. The last one is on its way and should be here on time for Monday's launch.
During these final days before the system launch, Johnson said his staff is almost overwhelmed with inquiries and concerns related to the new system.
"We can only handle so many calls in an hour and we've had a lot of calls," he said, adding residents should visit www.moosejaw.ca before phoning city hall.
