BURNABY, B.C. - A teenager opened fire on a crowd of people at a bus stop outside a B.C. school, injuring as many as six people including a bus driver who tried to intervene, police said Monday.

The RCMP said they arrested an 18-year-old male who was once a student at Burnaby Mountain School, east of Vancouver, several hours later.

Classes at the school were already finished for the day when a teenage male hid in nearby bushes and fired the rifle-like pellet gun.

A bus driver noticed the teen in the bushes and went to confront him, but the attacker sprayed the driver with bear spray, kept firing the pellet gun and ran.

Ambulances were called and five or six people were treated for minor injuries, said Cpl. Alexandra Mulvihill.

She said it doesn't appear to be a targeted attack.

"It seems to be random at this point, we have no motive," said Mulvihill.

"This seems to be somebody who intentionally hid themselves in some bushes and started firing. It doesn't not appear to be a case of friends out goofing around."

The RCMP arrested an 18-year-old about three hours after the shooting. They said the suspect was a former student at the school, but did not reveal his name or anything else about him.

Even though classes had ended, the school was locked down to prevent the teen from entering the building, said Mulvihill.
