Downtown parking needs being studied

During Monday's executive committee meeting, administration discussed recommendations regarding increasing downtown monthly rental parking.

According to city treasurer Ray Goruick, with all the property acquired in downtown Moose Jaw for developments over the past year, the city has seen a reduction of 201 monthly parking spots.

Therefore, the city (which currently has 72 monthly rental stalls available) is receiving several inquiries from individuals and businesses looking for monthly spaces to rent.

Goruick said a review shows the Ominica Street West parking lot (next to the Professional Medical Building) currently has nine electric parking stalls, five non-electric stalls and 11 metered spots (which provide $6,800 annual income for the city).

He said the whole area could become electrified monthly parking for a $10,000 cost.

Another option Goruick mentioned was to convert 24 spots in the northwest corner of the city hall parking lot from metered parking to monthly parking, at an estimated $16,000 cost.

Although revenue from monthly rental stalls is less than for metered stalls, administration believes motorists who use the metered stalls in those parking lots would probably just use metered stalls elsewhere downtown, so the city shouldn't lose money.

To provide more downtown parking after business hours, Goruick said administration is also recommending monthly parking stalls be made available for general public use during evenings and weekends.

Coun. Brian Swanson said he often drove by the monthly parking spots lost to recent downtown property acquisition and some were rarely used, so he thinks administration might be too proactive in replacing all those stalls.

Therefore, he would like to wait and see what happens in the area (regarding parking demand) before the city starts spending money.

Swanson made a motion that administration's monthly rental parking report be forwarded to the Moose Jaw Downtown Business Improvement District for input, with which the executive committee agreed and approved.

I thought according to the Steering comittee report all trafiic and parking issues would be fixed for under $25,000 and we need to study again? Listen to the committee!

Clifford only way your gonna be able to park there is for a monthly fee... which means people that go to Dr. John to have their eyes checked, people that go to the bank, and people that shop at ashdowns, have no were to park because they are gonna sell off the parking spots to the richys! Monthly spots can only be parked in if you pay a monthly fee.

Yes the possibility is there, but in reality those new spots will be bought by downtown business people that may not want to go to the games and you and I will not be able to use them. The City needs to bite the bullet and add two levels of parking ontop of the existing parking lot behind City Hall, a proposal which was put fwd to them many years ago.........This also will not be enough but I feel is the best option for the use of the new facility as well as everyday use downtown.

Actually, some of the downtown business people that voted for the M thought all the added people would help out their business, when actually it will be driving all the local people elsewhere - Walmart, etc, so then what will happen? Sorry, but
if I was going to a game, I sure as heck
would not be going shopping, browsing, or eating downtown. And if I lived out of town, sorry, but a trip to the Jaw is not a big deal

Actually, this was not a surprise nor was it unexpected...they need parking for their multiplex so they will take from the downtown business.
Glad I shop at Walmart...and very little in the downtown core. No parking...

I guess we better get used to it. Personally, I will be switching as much as I can so I never have to go down-town. I hate it already, and this just makes it worse. The businesses that are located elsewhere should get a boost!!!! I like the unsurprisingly expected Wasn't it? And yes sarkastic - are they
silly or something, I mean we are doing
everything right . Shouldn't they follow our lead? Imagine, having a parking lot @
a mall!!!! How silly, that's almost as bad as having parking @ a sports arena!!!

It will be the same people getting their eyes checks and going to the bank that will also be going to the hockeys games. This is 72 spots and with the 70 spots onsite at the multiplex this will be a huge help!

Look people thought parking was going to be a issue for the multiplex. $10,000 and problem solved. You can even plug your car in and keep it warm. Kudos for the quick resolution to the problem Dale!

What kills me is if you figure out how much money a parking meter brings in if it was used none stop through out the day, the revenue is only a couple hundred dollars but the city claims it loses tens of thousands of dollars per month if it was free. Someone is relying heavily on parking tickets as revenue instead of the meters.

I say no Kudos, this is not a resolution but another problem caused for the citizens of Moose Jaw. I happen to conduct business and have appointments in that area of town and greatly appreciate the fact taht I can park in the parking lot. I would be pretty enraged if I had to walk 6 blocks to go to the bank and I am sure I am not the only one that feels this way...

Hi, I agree with alot of these comments, the parking lot where Dr. John has her office is really beneficial to the seniors who park down town and bank at the Royal bank, what is city council trying to prove, make everyone take the bus to make extra revenue.
