When I woke up Sunday morning, drank my coffee and thought about my day, I had no idea what I was in for.
I thought it was going to be a nice quiet Sunday. You know, head on down to the Queen City and District Soapbox Derby, check out some cars, visit with the drivers and have some fun of my own.
And when I say fun of my own, I mean take a ride in a soapbox race car.
Now for those of you who are not familiar with this particular type of vehicle, let me tell you, it may not look like much, with its bullet shaped exterior, hollow interior and small thin wheels but once you get going down that hill and the momentum picks up, it is quite the ride.
I have to admit when I first saw the car I was going to be driving, three thoughts popped into my head.
One, how am I going to fit into this tiny little car? Two, what have I got myself into? And three, I hope this thing has brakes.
To my surprise I did fit. It was a bit snug but I squeezed myself in there. As for the brakes, they did exist and worked quite well. I made sure, they were the first thing we tested. And as for what I got myself into, well, that was yet to be determined.
Before heading down the three block track, I asked my fellow drivers if they had any last minute advice for the rookies out there.
One little girl immediately said, "Yeah, don't crash." Another said "if you keep your head low the faster you will go." And finally, Moose Jaw's Breanne Brooks, whose car I was driving, said "have fun."
