Chaplin School has been declared the first School of Opportunity in Saskatchewan, saving it from closure.
In a news release it said the School of Opportunity designation was created last year, by the government, to ensure that the potential for future economic growth is considered before changes are made to a community school.
An application for the designation is only considered after a Board of Education makes a final motion to close a school.
Based on a thorough review of the Chaplin application, which was asking for designation as a kindergarten to Grade 12 school, Deputy Premier and Education Minister Ken Krawetz said it was decided the school would receive designation from Kindergarten to Grade 8.
Gord Stewart, chairman for PSSD, said he is pleased with the decision.
He said the school that was slated for closure come July has been given an opportunity through economic growth to increase its numbers.
Stewart said it was the decision of the board to originally close the school because it did not meet a criteria it had set out by the board.
"Basically, what we are saying is that we want all of our schools to have a good quality learning experience for the students, while at the same time making good use of the resources that we have."
