There was a time when teachers would get acquainted with students at the beginning of a new school year by taking advantage of the first creative writing class to solicit an assignment on "how I spent my summer holidays."
It was a way to find out which students did some travelling and might have more insights into their province, country or world. It also let the teachers know which students were enterprising (from operating a lemonade stand to babysitting to working a summer job) and which were serious about athletics (attended a sports camp for the summer). In some ways, it also gave a little information on the family dynamics (spent the summer at the other parent's house in some other city, or looked after siblings while both parents worked, etc.).
There were always those with exciting essays about trips to far-away places or holiday destinations such as Disneyland that made the other students a bit jealous - if not the teacher.
But most of us would be hard pressed to remember a student whose essay focussed on them winning the Miss Teen Canada World contest.
So step up Siera Bearchell and revel in your moment. Not only did she win the Canadian title at a contest in Toronto, she now moves on to the world competition in Houston, Texas, and who knows where that will lead.
This will go down as a summer of memories for the 16-year-old Moose Javian.
Congratulations to both Bearchell and Kelsey Keddy, another local girl who made it to the national competition. Both of their summer essays should pretty much write themselves.
A summer to remember for Bearchell, Keddy
