Many students in this city are heading into their final week of summer holidays. So are many teachers. Vanier Collegiate students and staff have already returned to the hallowed halls of learning.
As is the case most years, the summer will have slipped by too quickly.
It's a bit of a mixed blessing as school provides structure that many children not only need, but want. It also allows children to reunite with friends they haven't seen since June or meet new friends.
The return to school also provides some comfort for parents. While no place is ever 100 per cent safe for anyone, we have generally come to accept that schools are relatively safe places for our children.
Sadly, violence and weapons have crept in to many schools and the schoolyard bully has become a little more frightening than what parents might have encountered. But schools remain one of the safest places for our children when we can't be with them.
And it provides learning experiences that only a group setting can provide with shared ideas and open discussions.
We all know summer can't last forever. But at least for kids it lasts a couple of months - much longer than most parents have the opportunity to enjoy. However, it has to end in order for life to continue.
