There has probably been a fair amount of griping in some households this week as students return to school. The thing is, not all the griping is legitimate.
Some young people feel obligated to complain about going back to school despite the fact they kind of miss the structure school brings to their lives.
Yes, it's great to sleep in, hang out with friends and play sports or computer games for hours at a time. But even that gets boring after a while.
Most people need structure. It's not just students, it's all of us. As much as most of us long to win the lottery so we can quit our jobs and do what we want when we want, few of us are great at keeping ourselves entertained for any length of time.
We begin to miss the friends we normally see five days a week. We miss some parts of our jobs that we liked. And the next thing we know, we are bored with this great life we chose.
Ask people who have retired after working most of their lives. Many say they don't know what to do with their time.
It takes a while, but eventually most find something to do - something that gives their lives some form of structure, sort of like school.
