Perhaps it's time for some parents to look into a curriculum strictly for home-schooled students.
Right now, most students who are home-schooled are there because the parents want to be the child's educator. But it is getting to a point where parents are tying teachers' hands so tightly, teaching is the last thing on their agenda.
A teacher in Sussex. N.B., became the focal point of a national controversy when he decided to stop playing the Canadian national anthem every day, instead just playing it for special occasions. He says he did this because the parents of two of his students objected to their children participating in the anthem for religious reasons.
But his efforts to appease these parents caused another parent to leave harassing phone messages and e-mails for the teacher and even a threat to beat him "senseless."
If all these parents - the ones who objected to the anthem and the one who made all the threats - don't like the way students are taught in school, maybe they should home-school them. That way their child isn't exposed to elements these parents don't agree with.
