REGINA - Saskatchewan and Montana appear ready to take the plunge into a formal agreement to store carbon emissions underground.
Premier Brad Wall says he's hopeful that the province and the state will sign an official memorandum on carbon sequestration this week.
It's expected to happen when Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer visits Saskatchewan.
The proposed $250 million project would see carbon dioxide emitted from a coal-fired power plant in southern Saskatchewan piped to Montana for underground storage.
Wall says the province will kick in about $50 million, but he acknowledged that amount could go up.
Ottawa is being asked to pitch in $100 million and Schweitzer hopes to get the same amount from a stimulus package in the U.S. - although neither federal government has committed cash to the project yet.
