If Jesus had been born in the Wild West, his nativity story might have been a little different.
Instead of three wise men following a star, it might have been three cowboys riding a trail. Instead of a carpenter and virgin, think of a young pioneer couple out on the plains. To find out for sure you'll have to see the Classic Country Christmas Concert.
It's a re-imagining of the nativity story with a cowboy twist.
"It's a celebration of Christmas past on the frontier in the Western tradition. We're doing it cowboy-style, and the setting is on a ranch in the hills," said Ken Mitchell, co-producer of the show.
Mitchell and his brother Wayne, aka Slim, Mitchell will be performing as cowboy poets. The show will also feature period songs, medieval ballads, folk music, choirs and the Celtic band Desperate for Haggis.
The concert is on Dec. 20 at 8 p.m. at the Mae Wilson Theatre. The opening reception will have drinks and Christmas treats. An earlier show is taking place in the Mae Wilson Theatre at 2 p.m. with free admission for seniors.
"No Ordinary Cowboy (the afternoon performance) will have good music and poetry," Mitchell said. "If they want to laugh it they should come out."
