There was finally fresh corn to be had at the local producers' farmers' market on Saturday, something late risers learned the hard way.
"You should have come earlier, you could have had some fresh corn; but it's all gone now," exclaimed Joshua Wipf, 11, one of the helpers at the market, to a late-arriving customer.
Saturday marked the first time this summer corn was available for purchase at the market, which is put on by members of the Baildon Hutterite colony.
As organizer of the market and colony gardener Peter Wipf explained, the generally cool weather has meant later arrival times for all vegetables.
"Everything is late this year, but at the same time everything is good," he said.
"It's been an excellent year. We've had a nice crop in the garden and we've had excellent sales. It's always very busy on Saturday mornings around here."
The market runs every Saturday morning until 1 p.m. from mid-July to the end of September. Copious amounts of fresh items were available, including potatoes, eggs, beans, radishes, rhubarb and kohlrabi - a spherical vegetable with thin offshoots protruding from the centre.
Along with produce from Baildon's communal gardens, the market features local producers of honey, baking and stepping stones.
The Baildon colony has been organizing farmers' markets in Moose Jaw since 1968.
