Moose Jaw - Even though she is no longer Moose Jaw city council's representative with the Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association (SUMA), Coun. Dawn Luhning will still play a significant role in the organization's upcoming convention.
During the Nov. 17 council meeting, Coun. Regina Sagal-Hendry ran against Luhning for the role of SUMA representative during the nomination and appointment of councillors to the various boards and committees for 2009 and won the vote. Therefore, Luhning relinquished her post on Thursday.
However, Wes Jickling, SUMA policy and communications director, said the SUMA board decided at its Dec. 12-13 meeting to keep Luhning on as a co-chairwoman of the upcoming convention.
He said the reason for her remaining with a convention position, despite no longer being Moose Jaw's SUMA representative, was continuity. She was appointed to the position earlier in 2008 and has been actively participating in the planning of the convention with the assumption she would be the chairwoman.
However, the board also decided Luhning wouldn't chair the convention alone. Her co-chairman will be Regina Coun. Michael Fougere.
This year's SUMA convention is in Saskatoon, Feb. 1-4. The gathering is held every year in one of Saskatchewan's two largest cities and includes representatives from the province's 14 cities, 145 towns, 252 villages, 31 resort villages, 22 northern municipalities and one municipal district.
Tania Meier, SUMA corporate program manager, said the convention is an opportunity to educate members on a series of topics regarding municipal governance.
Along with the various information sessions, Meier said the convention also gives members a chance to mingle, particularly during the Sunday night awards banquet.
She added Luhning's role throughout the convention will be to act as a SUMA board representative, as well as kick off the convention with some welcoming speeches.
For more information on SUMA and the upcoming convention, visit www.suma.org.

i had no idea people were so passionate about the SUMA convention. for myself, i can't exactly say i've been marking the days off on the calendar in eager anticipation of the daily press releases from the convention.
i suspect that the CAVE's would have been just as outraged if Luhning had been replaced as the rep at the annual tiddlywinks convention. -

Chairmans come and go just like coaches and other representatives. Just because they keep Dawn on as Co-Chair does not mean that Sagal-Hendry would not make a good co-chair. Perhaps it was too late to get another co-chair for this particular convention. Sooner or later this convention will get future co-chairs and then what would folks say? Changes are inevitable.

It is good to see individuals like old man from Moose Jaw have a clear view of reality.
If only those who persist in seeing things through rose colored glasses would also see the light of day, then maybe this community would move forward in a positive direction at an appropriate pace. -

Old man, you have said it all, you are so correct about what you say. Listen people to a man with intelligence for a change. Yes, you should run for council and run the Leiperts, VanDenCrooks, Pilsners out of town.

The Multiplex: To be sung in unison.
And it's one two three, what are we building it for?
Don't ask me, council doesn't give a dam, they live in the world of peter pan!
And it's four five six, up goes the deficit.
Ain't no time to wonder why, whoppee we're all gonna cry!
You can be the first one on the block, to give this council their knock......Vote NO! -

Hi Shawn:
Most projects take years to fruition. Some committees and boards I am sure have split votes where an issue has divided the members but yet they seem to roll-up their sleeves and get the job done.
Here in Moose Jaw, we continuily have members in opposition instead of making sure that the job gets done. Kind of make you wonder on what their real pupose is. Is it to protect us from ourselves because we are unable to or are their other purposes in mind.
If you oppose something for the sake of opposition its a negative drain on the efforts of all involved. Besides, you can't be right all the time, can you? -

Hi Pearl & Old Man:
Most folks on this website can't take a little friendly ribbing. You point out a little minor gap in their argument and they are all over you.
There are many ways of looking at what's happening in our community. Moose Jaw as well as other community-minded citizens will always oppose regardless of the issues and take shots at the current city council just by virtue of their position in the community. Remember the Spa & Library and Swimming Pool debates and so on.
We have a democracy. The current city council is elected by a majority of citizens in Moose Jaw and what most folks just don't get is that city council does not need to seek approval for every item regardless of what we think. After all we elected them. We are free to make changes every few years or so at election time.
This website is meant for, and we hope, a little friendly debate because after all we are known as the Friendly City.
Wishing all the best to you in the New Year, Pearl and Old Man, and the rest of the folks that frequent the TH websites. -

LMAO@Shawn: How do you possibly lay the blame on ONE councillor for 'delaying everything' and 'costing you money'? She is ONE vote!! Quite often only one of two sound minded votes on that joke we call a council. Last time I checked, that meant that whatever the 'fab five' wants, the 'fab five' gets. Forget logic or common sense! Let's just push push push, even if it means bankrupting our city!!
So, how does, in your mind, ONE councillor have the power (considering majority rules) to 'delay' the project and 'cost' you ANY money? Just curious as to your rationale. Also, if our supposed business leaders were so willing to 'grow and expand' our city, then where the hell is their money??? I don't see a dime of it in the city's hands yet for this monstroplex! Do you? -

So if the so called Fab 5 had their way and no one was slowing it down do you tink they would have had all the trouble they have had.
They simply would have built it by now.
Does that make any sense to you. Something is holding up the process and has for close to 4 years now.
Was it Santa Claus causing all the problems? -

Well Will, have you ever thought about how building this Multiplex might affect those who make charitable donations to such causes? I know that expected tax increase, not counting the one to operate the facility will greatly affect my over all cost of living let alone any possible future charitable donations. I wouldn`t be surprised if it pushed some people on fixed incomes to start looking to the food bank, those who historically always donated to the less fortunate! Good reason to make this the number one story, and shame on city council for not listening.

Hi B:
I suppose we are all entitled to see what we want to see and I don't see the same as you do at the City Council meetings. All council members have the ums from time to time and that can be alleviated through experience and opportunity. Don't you agree? -

Hi Pearl:
What mess? Last time I heard SUMA was doing fine. Funny how folks just like to gripe when democracy is working. We can't always get what we want. I also don't place much faith that folks on City Council read this as well as other sites given all the poor comments, especially the name calling, that seem to monopolize. -

Charles from SK writes: I think they realized what Sagal-Hendry could add to the meeting and realized it was a complete waste of time to have her chair a meeting! Good job Dawn and keep representing the citizens of Moose Jaw. We need more people like you and Brian on council that speak their mind!
No one minds if they speak their mind, I don't even mind them being fiscally responsible. I do have a problem with them delaying everything and costing me money... That is something I do have a problem with. Let the city grow. Invest in our own community for once. Give it a facelift. Allow our business leaders to grow and expand the city.
Stop stopping progress for crying out loud. Espescially at my expense. -

Dawn you're doing a great job. Hang in there. Only 10 months to go, and you can have your SUMA seat back, and much much more. Only problem is, you're gonna have one helluva mess to clean up!

Apart from being Swanson's bobble-head doll what has Luhning done for the taxpayers? Her nickname should be DITTO. The members of Suma must enjoy watching her chase her hidden Kleenex or playing with her bra straps;that's all we see on TV. I am personally rooting for the Kleenex!!She is paid to validate our vote FOR the multiplex, not brown nose to Swanson.

The antics of the current MJ Council are being observed beyond the city limits. They may think they have fooled folks in many of their actions but they are the ones deceived. Most folks who think for themselves (like SUMA) see through the politics being played out by the five puppets not only regarding the SUMA nomination but also the Multiplex mess. I am afraid the legacy of the FAB Five will not be flattering.

Shawn and Dave: You just dont seem to get it. The actual delays were caused by the builders group and their council supports trying to put lipstick on this downtown pig. Every conceivable rational and underhanded technique has been used to justify a fundamentally flawed project. Dawn proposed a very workable project that was shut down by the builders who then manipulated council to stack the steering committee with their supporters. Then as every report came in questioning the downtown site they kept asking for more reports, then put out an incredible report, forced a council vote without community input. Ignore the facts all you wont but if this project goes ahead as planned Moose Jaw will be the laughing stock of Western Canada. There will be no increase in tourism, poor facilities, and even less reason for people and businesses to locate in Moose Jaw. It is so sad what the fab 5 have done for or is it to Moose Jaw.
